How Does Ultrasonic Cleaning Work?
Ultrasonic cleaning uses high-frequency sound waves travelling through a heated cleaning solution. The sound waves create millions of microscopic bubbles that collapse against the surface of an item, a process called cavitation. That gentle scrubbing action lifts soot, smoke residue, mould spores and flood contaminants out of cracks, engraving, hinges and other places no cloth or brush can reach, without abrading the surface.

Our Ultrasonic Cleaning Process, Step by Step
- Pack-out and inventory. Items are packed and recorded through our contents pack-out service and photo inventory.
- Sorting and testing. Each item is assessed for material, finish and damage type to confirm it is safe to immerse.
- Pre-treatment. Heavy soot or residue is loosened first.
- Ultrasonic wash. Cavitation removes contaminants from every surface, inside and out.
- Rinse and dry. Items are rinsed and thoroughly dried to prevent spotting or corrosion.
- Deodorize if needed. Lingering odours move on to deodorization and decontamination.
- Inspect, record and return. Cleaned items are checked, updated in your inventory, then stored or packed back.
What Cannot Be Ultrasonically Cleaned?
Not everything should go in the tank. Items that cannot be safely immersed are cleaned another way, and powered devices go through our dedicated electronics restoration and cleaning process instead.
If an item does not respond to cleaning, it is placed on the non-restorable list in your inventory so it can be claimed. Our guide to non-restorable items explains how that works.

Is ultrasonic cleaning safe for delicate items?
Yes, for the right materials. Ultrasonic cleaning does not scrub the surface, so it is well suited to china, crystal, ceramics, jewellery and detailed collectibles. We assess every item first, and anything that should not be immersed is cleaned by another method.
Can ultrasonic cleaning remove smoke and soot?
Yes. Cavitation lifts soot and smoke residue out of crevices and textures that hand cleaning cannot reach. Items that still carry an odour afterwards go through deodorization.
Does ultrasonic cleaning work after a flood or mould?
Yes. Hard, non-porous contents affected by flood water or mould can be ultrasonically cleaned to remove contaminants before they are dried and returned.
Do you clean electronics in the ultrasonic tank?
No. Powered devices go through our separate electronics restoration process, which cleans them without saturating them in water and dries them in our Electronic Drying Chamber.
Is ultrasonic cleaning covered by insurance?
