Rug Cleaning and Restoration in Calgary
Professional cleaning for area rugs and runners damaged by water, smoke, soot, odour or mould, including wool and hand-woven rugs.
A rug soaks up whatever happens in a room: flood water, firefighting water, soot and odour. Cleaned properly, most area rugs can be saved.
Water can bleed dyes, shrink fibres and grow mould in the backing within a couple of days. Smoke leaves soot and odour deep in the pile. Surface cleaning or a rental machine rarely reaches either, and drying a rug badly can do as much damage as the water.
Calgary Contents cleans area rugs off site, where they can be washed thoroughly, rinsed and dried flat in controlled conditions before they come home.
Rugs we clean:
Wool and synthetic area rugs
Hand-woven and Persian-style rugs
Runners and hallway rugs
Rugs with smoke or soot damage
Rugs from flooded basements
Rugs with pet or musty odour
Rug Cleaning After Water and Smoke Damage
Each rug is inspected first: fibre, construction, dyes and the type of damage. Loose soil and soot are removed, then the rug is washed with a method that suits it, rinsed thoroughly and dried flat so it keeps its shape. Odour that remains is treated afterwards.
Speed matters most after a flood. Lift the rug off a wet floor if you can, and do not leave it rolled up or folded while wet. Our guide to area rug water damage covers the first 48 hours.
We check every rug for:
Fibre type and construction
Colourfastness of the dyes
Damage to the backing and fringe
Odour and contamination
Mould or mildew
How Our Rug Cleaning Works
- Pick-up and inventory. Rugs are rolled, labelled and recorded as part of your pack-out.
- Inspection. We check fibre, dyes and damage, and test for colour bleeding.
- Dry soil and soot removal. Loose dirt and soot are removed before the rug gets wet.
- Washing and rinsing. The rug is cleaned with a method suited to its fibre and thoroughly rinsed.
- Controlled drying. Rugs dry flat so they do not shrink, buckle or grow mildew.
- Deodorizing and return. Any remaining odour is treated, and the rug comes home ready to lay down.
When to Call Us About a Rug
Call as soon as a rug has been soaked, sat in standing water, picked up soot from a fire or started to smell musty. The longer a wet rug sits, the more likely it is to bleed, shrink or grow mould in the backing. Rugs that cannot be restored are photographed and documented for your claim, and rugs that can be saved come back clean, dry and flat. See water and flood damaged belongings.

FAQ – Rug Cleaning
Can a rug be saved after a flood?
Often, if it is dried and cleaned quickly. Wool and hand-woven rugs are more durable than they look. Rugs soaked in sewage are assessed case by case. See area rug water damage.
Can smoke smell be removed from a rug?
Usually. Rugs are cleaned to remove soot and residue from the pile and backing, then deodorized if any odour remains.
Do you clean wall-to-wall carpet?
Our rug cleaning is for area rugs and runners that can be removed and cleaned properly. Installed carpet is usually handled by the restoration contractor working on the building.
Will the colours run?
Every rug is tested for colourfastness before cleaning, and the method is chosen to protect the dyes.
Is rug cleaning covered by insurance?
When the loss is covered, cleaning your rugs is usually part of the contents claim. Rugs that cannot be restored are documented for replacement.
